A consolidated federal lawsuit filed by attorneys general from 41 states is seeking over $4 billion from Meta, TikTok parent ByteDance, Snap Inc., and YouTube owner Alphabet, alleging the companies knowingly deployed addictive design features that caused widespread mental health harm to minors, including depression, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, and self-harm.

The case, centralized in the Northern District of California, combines individual state actions with a sweeping consumer protection and personal injury theory that legal experts say represents the most coordinated legal assault on social media companies to date.

What the Lawsuit Alleges

The complaint alleges that each platform:

  • Had internal research documenting harmful effects on teen users, particularly girls, yet continued deploying the features
  • Designed infinite scroll, autoplay, and algorithmic recommendation systems specifically to maximize time-on-app among minors
  • Used personalization algorithms that pushed body image content, self-harm communities, and eating disorder content to vulnerable teens
  • Misrepresented the safety of their platforms to parents and regulators

The Evidence

Much of the case relies on internal documents produced in previous litigation, including Meta’s own research showing Instagram made body image issues worse for 1 in 3 teen girls, and TikTok engineering documents showing the algorithm was capable of identifying users with depression and increasing content designed to “retain” rather than support them.

Defendants’ Response

Meta said the lawsuit “ignores the many tools we provide parents and teens.” TikTok called the allegations “inaccurate” and said it “leads the industry in protecting young people.” Snap and Alphabet also denied the core allegations.

Individual Claims Still Possible

Beyond the state AG action, thousands of individual families have filed personal injury lawsuits in the same MDL. Parents of teens who were hospitalized for eating disorders, self-harm, or suicidality related to social media use may still be able to join the individual litigation. The MDL judge has set bellwether trials for late 2027.
